Especially when it comes to marketing images, you want to make sure your headshot allows you to really stand out. After all, that’s the point, right?

Your headshot should be the best representation of you and your brand – but you also want it to be memorable.

That’s why we put together this list of bold wardrobe choices that can help you stand out, while still keeping in line with our basic guidelines for what to wear on camera.

You might remember, in a recent blog, we outlined our five best tips for what to wear in a headshot session, for the most flattering look on camera. Now, with those five tips as our foundation, we want to take it one step further and show you how to make bold wardrobe choices that look good – and help you stand out on camera

1. Bold Color Choice

As many of you may know, we typically suggest solid colors over patterns when it comes to choosing your wardrobe for the camera. Sometimes patterns can distort on camera, and they can distract from the focal point – which is you.

But solid colors doesn’t mean you always have to choose black. In fact, one of the easiest ways to stand out on camera is to choose an uncommon solid color that complements your complexion beautifully. That could be a bright, vibrant color like yellow or magenta. Or it could be a muted jewel tone, such as a burgundy suit for a man.

Whatever color you decide to go with, this is an easy way to be more memorable, while maintaining a very clean and professional look.

2. Interesting Detail

This allows the camera to actually see your shape, which means the photographer can Photoshop it in post-production. If you hide your shape in baggy clothes, however, then the photographer doesn’t have as much to work with in the editing process. It might sound counter-intuitive, but fitted clothes make you look thinner on camera.

However, there’s still a lot of room to play with a fitted silhouette. You could choose a fitted silhouette with an interesting detail. For example, a beautiful flutter sleeve adds a nice touch, or a bold metallic zipper can accentuate your shape and add a nice pop of color.

3. Statement Accessories

We also typically recommend classic styles over trendy styles. Why? A trend is supposed to last for a short period of time. The whole point of a trend is to be temporary. But you want your headshots to stand the test of time, especially if you only update your headshots every few years. That’s why, when it comes to wardrobe, we typically suggest classic styles.

That doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t have some fun with a statement accessory! This is a really easy way to stand out for both men and women. While most people might think of a statement necklace or heel, men have the opportunity to showcase their personality with a stand-out tie, pocket square or even socks. This way, you can keep the suit classic, but the details are more modern.
