1. Preparation
When it comes to family portraits, there can be a lot of moving parts: choosing your wardrobe, coordinating colors and outfits, getting the family ready, getting yourself ready, etc. Plus, you might want to schedule haircuts or other grooming appointments in the days leading up to your portrait session.
Yes, it can feel like a lot – if you’re not prepared. But that’s exactly what we do for our families here at SchlickArt.
Every family photography experience begins with a consultation where we discuss your vision and answer all your questions, no matter how big or small they might seem. We walk you through each step, and we continue to check in with you along the way.

2. Styling Support
One of our clients’ most common questions is always: What should I wear? Well, whether you can’t match socks to save your life, or you’re on the verge of becoming a fashion influencer, there’s one important thing to remember.
Clothes look different on camera.
That’s why, at SchlickArt, we discuss the ins and outs of styling in your initial consultation and provide additional support throughout the process. After all, coordinating outfits for your entire family is different than putting together just yours.
To get you started, we have sample color palettes to get you started, and we can walk you through the silhouettes that look best on camera. That way, you can eliminate the guesswork and plan your looks with confidence.
Then, once you arrive on set, we help you choose and coordinate the final details. Whether you bring a suitcase full of shoes (it’s happened) or a few simple selections, we’ll go through your wardrobe and accessories with you.
We know color, shape and fabric like you know the details of your own field. So you’re not just getting a good photo – you’re getting a little bit of star treatment at the same time.
3. Hair & Makeup Services
Depending on your preference and your timeline, you may want professional hair and makeup services before your shoot. That’s why we’ve searched far and wide for professional stylists who work in the entertainment industry. Why? They understand how to create the perfect hair and makeup looks that also translate flawlessly on camera.
If you’ve booked an in-studio session, you have the option to book your hair and makeup through us, at an additional cost. Then, before your session, you can enjoy a relaxing sit in the makeup chair, while we get you pampered and ready for your session. Not only does it make you look your best, but this luxurious experience makes you feel good, too.
4. Natural Light Photography
From the very beginning, natural light has been a key factor in the SchlickArt formula. Why? With its glowy bright tones, it acts like nature’s best Instagram filter. It flatters flaws and forgives skin inconsistencies, all while illuminating your natural color.
Natural light brings out all those beautiful details that make you who you are – like eye color or the shape of your features – while diminishing the bits we don’t like – like skin pigmentation or dark circles.
In fact, every aspect of SchlickArt Studios is designed to optimize natural light in a way that makes your final images look simply luscious. From reflective backdrop boards to sheer white curtains, every tool and prop is used to bounce light evenly and beautifully.

We know you want to look and feel your very best when you get your portrait taken. That’s why we do everything we can to make you feel pampered and taken care of from the moment your session begins.
First and foremost, we always make sure to take extra care of Mom – because we know she’s usually getting everyone else ready while trying to get herself ready, too. So we pay extra attention to her hair, makeup and posing, making adjustments and touch-ups when needed.
But we don’t just take care of Mom. We do everything in our power to keep the mood positive, the kids engaged, and the parents happy from beginning to end, even if that means chasing the kiddos around the park just to get that perfect candid shot.

6. Posing Instruction
We all want to look our best on camera. That’s why we make it easy to feel confident with customized posing instruction that takes you out of your head – and lets you simply relax and have fun.
By demonstrating each pose ourselves, we show you exactly what you’re supposed to do, from what to do with your hands to where to place your feet. We’ll help you build each pose from head to toe. We’ll even lead your family through a couple deep breaths to help everyone settle and connect before the session starts.
Are you looking for a less posed and more candid style of shoot? We’ve got that covered, too. In an outdoor session, our photographer Sonja will run around with the kiddos to capture genuine playtime, while she encourages sibling love and gets everyone laughing. Your kids won’t even realize they’re in a photo shoot – and the photos will be all the proof you need.
7. Genuine Expressions
Just like we have a system to build the perfect pose, we also have a system to elicit the perfect expression.
Since we don’t use flash photography, we can shoot rapid-fire to capture multiple images in the span of a second or two. That way, we can capture the entire range of each smile – from the small smirk, all the way up to a full grin, and back to neutral again. Somewhere in that range is the perfect smile, the one that’s big enough to be genuine but also relaxed enough to not feel forced.
Plus, we also have some fun sayings to help elicit a real and genuine smile, if anyone in your family is feeling shy. (But if you want to see what that’s all about, you’ll have to join us in the studio!)
8. Perfect Shots
After the planning and shooting is done, the real fun begins. This is when you get to see your beautiful images during a private Luxury Purchasing Session in the studio. Like every other part of the process, we do everything we can to make this experience special and luxurious from start to finish.
After your shoot is over, we head back to the studio and begin sorting through your images to find the best ones. We know that staring at a sheet of thumbnail-sized images can be daunting, confusing and not helpful. All the images start to blend together, and it’s hard to choose which ones you really love and need. That’s why we handle this part of the process for you.
Then, at a later date, we’ll invite you back to the studio to view a custom slideshow that showcases the best image from every pose. We’ll greet you with handmade truffles and bubbly to celebrate (or choose a celebratory drink of your choice). And we’ll walk you through our different packages and purchasing options.

9. Signature Retouching
Even after the shoot is finished, we continue to make things as easy as possible, especially when it comes to editing your images. Our signature retouching brightens the image, illuminates skin, masks imperfections and brings out your natural color. We do just enough to make sure you look like you on your very best day, but we don’t go overboard or do any kind of editing that will alter your expression of features.
Though we have a signature style that our clients love, we also know this is a sensitive and delicate part of the process that’s completely up to you. As we review your images, we’ll get an idea of what you like and don’t like before we even start editing. Plus, you get a round of revisions, which means we can edit anything you like, or we can pull back the editing wherever you like, as well.
