Creating Powerful Video Messages While Staying Safer At Home

Kirsten QuinnVideo, Visual Marketing

Two exciting video projects challenged us to create a compelling message with only at-home video and a powerful purpose. Here’s how we did it while staying Safer at Home.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has changed so many things – including video production – but that hasn’t stopped people from creating powerful messages using the world’s most popular medium.

In fact, since video is now one of the few ways we can connect with each other, it’s become an even more powerful way to create a sense of togetherness. On a collective level, we’re all getting more comfortable being in front of a camera, and we’re realizing the untapped power of a video message. It’s been an amazing shift to witness – and an even more exciting one to be a part of.

How We Create Video Marketing While Staying Safer At Home

The #SCVPROUD Video Project

During the first week of the “Safer at Home” order, SchlickArt was invited by the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce to produce a special community video to raise spirits and disseminate vital information. Of course, we were thrilled to be part of the project, which presented a couple creative challenges.

First, we needed to capture video interviews with 30+ prominent Santa Clarita leaders and cut them into one cohesive message. Second, we needed to figure how to do so without ever seeing them. So we got to work on executing a large video project while strictly adhering to the “Safer at Home” order.

To help our interviewees create individual, at-home videos that still looked professional and cohesive, we started with a little visual marketing education. We provided tips and advice for at-home video using just a smartphone – which you, too, can find on the SchlickArt YouTube channel

Next, the SCV Chamber of Commerce provided one script for everyone to read, which created a unified voice. That way, no one had the burden of “figuring out what to say,” making it easier for everyone involved.

Then we waited for the videos to roll in, and we have to say, we were so excited and impressed! Everyone put forth their best effort to provide clean, powerful video that resulted in a cohesive story filled with many different voices.

Even better yet, the format allowed us to create a video message that was engaging – even though we weren’t able to shoot it with all the bells and whistles we’re accustomed to.

Take a look for yourself! This #SCVPROUD video message brings us into the homes, offices and hearts of Santa Clarita’s City Council members, government officials, business owners, nonprofit directors, business organizations, hospital workers, restaurant owners, media outlets and more.

And we’ve never been more #SCVproud.

The Santa Barbara County Video Project

Shortly after completing the #SCVPROUD video, we were approached by Santa Barbara County to produce a similar video for their community. Of course, we were excited because we’d seen how a simple video could create a sense of unity.

Santa Barbara County, however, wanted a strong focus on disseminating countywide health and safety guidelines, as well. We thought this was a perfect format because the wide variety of voices helps viewers stay engaged. It also helped the county focus on what was most important with a single unifying, heartfelt message: “Stronger together, safely apart.”

Lastly, Santa Barbara County opted to run subtitles in two languages, which supported their goal of disseminating vital information. We thought this was an excellent choice for their purpose, since subtitles significantly increase engagement in online videos and make the information available to more people.

Overall, we were honored to be a part of two video projects that challenged us creatively while bringing people together amid trying times. We hope these two videos inspire you to create the video messages you feel compelled to share, too. In the meantime, we are always here to help answer any of your at-home video questions!
