More and more, women are finding their place in the spotlight — professionally, culturally and emotionally. They’re taking the stage as thought leaders and empowering the next generation with the most transformative of values, from self-worth to self-care. In arenas where they were previously overshadowed, women are now running the show, while also leading fulfilling lives at home and taking time to care for their families. In the year of the women, we really are doing it all — and the world has started to take notice.
Reese Witherspoon, for example, launched her own media company, Hello Sunshine, which is solely dedicated to “creating and discovering content that celebrates women and puts them at the center of the story.”
Meanwhile, researcher and author Brené Brown is changing the stories we tell ourselves by injecting our worldviews with a dose of compassion, courage and gracious imperfection.
Even businesswoman Kate Northrup recently published a new book that calls for ambitious women and mothers to “Do Less” by giving them permission to let go of people-pleasing and, instead, have more by doing less.
All around us, women are being called into the spotlight to usher in a new, compassionate way of being our best selves, achieving our dreams, and loving our families.
The Silent Generation of Women
While much of this wisdom and momentum comes from the generation of women who are reaching their 50s and older, there remains a gap in our cultural understanding of who those women are, as well as what they want. Yes, a handful of strong, beautiful 50+ role models are starting to take the stage, yet most women over 50 are still stuck in the shadows.
A study that surveyed 2,000 women ages 45+, for example, found that most of these women feel “invisible,” “left on the shelf,” or “judged negatively because of their age.”
In our industry, leading women’s photographer Sue Bryce has recently focused her career on the wise women of the 50+ age bracket, who she says no one is paying attention to.
“This woman is so powerful,” Bryce says. “Yet she is unseen. A woman over 50 doesn’t appear in media unless it’s a retirement ad. She barely exists — she’s nobody.”
And that breaks our hearts.
“This woman needs to exist. She’s beautiful. She’s powerful,” Bryce says. “And in three years, when I walk into this (group), I want to know that this woman has been seen, this woman has been heard, and this woman has been empowered.”
