Nerves are completely normal when it comes to a boudoir photography session. But with the right photographer and a positive mindset, boudoir could be the most fun you’ve ever had in front of the camera.

Here are 13 ways to calm your nerves before a boudoir photography session.

13 Ways To Calm Your Nerves Before A Boudoir Photography Session

1. Practice retail therapy

Boudoir photography session, how to calm your nerves, calm your nerves, how to calm your nerves for boudoir, SchlickArt boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir photographer, Santa Clarita boudoir photography, Los Angeles boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir shootYou know how slipping into a new dress gives you all the feels and instantly brings out your inner goddess? The same goes for lingerie. Sometimes all you need is a little something new to remind you that, in this exact moment, your body is still just as beautiful as ever.

The right lingerie can also help you feel better about those pesky insecurities. Check out our SchlickArt Ultimate Boudoir Lingerie Buying Guide to see what types of lingerie are best for each body type, as well as which pieces will flatter your trouble spots. Buying something that’s designed to cover your trouble spots puts your mind at ease when we start shooting … until you feel confident enough to switch into something more daring.

2. Pamper yourself, darling

A little extra self-care does wonders for your confidence. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh coat of polish and a DIY sugar scrub to make you feel like new again. Others may want the full pampering experience. In the days leading up to your shoot, try booking appointments for a mani-pedi, waxing, facial or sauna session. Anything that’s good for your skin, hair or nails is great. (Warning: Don’t do anything drastic to your hair in the days before a boudoir shoot – just in case it doesn’t come out the way you want it to.)

3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Boudoir photography session, how to calm your nerves, calm your nerves, how to calm your nerves for boudoir, SchlickArt boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir photographer, Santa Clarita boudoir photography, Los Angeles boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir shootIt’s natural. We all get nervous about our weight leading up to a boudoir shoot. But you’re beautiful just the way you are! In fact, you don’t need to lose weight for your session. Instead, just hydrate! Staying well hydrated during the days before your session will give you a natural glow and decrease bloating, which makes even more of a difference than losing 5 pounds! Are you an overachiever? Try eating more veggies and less processed food for a week before your session. It cuts down on bloating even more.

4. Host a private, at-home fashion show

On a day when you’re feeling particularly good about yourself, find some privacy and do an at-home fashion show – for your eyes only. There’s no pressure, no audience. It’s just you. Pull out your favorite pieces of lingerie, and grab a few of your favorite items of clothing: a flattering sweater, a sheer scarf, his sports jersey, his dress shirt, your favorite statement jewelry … the options are endless. Lay it all out on the bed and start to mix and match. Wanna turn up the mood? Blast your favorite pump-up music and strut in front of a full-length mirror. Who said we had to stop playing dress-up just because we grew up?

5. Schedule a girls night

Boudoir photography session, how to calm your nerves, calm your nerves, how to calm your nerves for boudoir, SchlickArt boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir photographer, Santa Clarita boudoir photography, Los Angeles boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir shootNeed some feedback from your girls for a real confidence boost? Schedule a girls night a few days before your session. You can show them your Pinterest board of ideas and ask their advice on accessories. If you’ve got a super supportive girl tribe, you can even model a few of the outfits you’re considering. There’s nothing like a flood of compliments and reassuring advice from the women you love and respect most in the world, right?

6. Call your photographer

Getting some good advice from your girls is never a bad thing, but sometimes it helps to lean on the professionals. Everyone always has a few questions they’re stuck on. If you’re dwelling on a certain insecurity or over-analyzing your outfit choices, just pick up the phone and call Lindsay. She’s done this a million times before, and she can easily calm your nerves – usually with a simple reply of, “Don’t worry honey, I can Photoshop that.” And we promise there’s nothing too embarrassing to ask! In fact, Lindsay has done a boudoir shoot herself, so she knows personally all the questions you may be struggling with right now.

7. Choose a self-love mantra

Start approaching your session with some positivity instead. Choose a self-love mantra that really speaks to you and repeat it several times a day. The more you commit to this, the more you’ll get out of it. In fact, you can even take your biggest insecurity and practice telling yourself the opposite is true. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • I am beautiful just the way I am.
  • My imperfections make me uniquely beautiful.
  • My beauty is worthy of being photographed and captured forever.
  • My confidence soars higher each and every day.
  • I am comfortable and confident in my own skin.
  • Being beautiful comes easy to me.
  • I am obsessed with becoming a woman comfortable in her own skin.

8. Remind yourself why

For many women, the nerves can ramp up the night before the shoot and heighten as you get ready for your shoot. At SchlickArt, we do everything we can to keep you relaxed and happy from the moment you walk in the studio. We’ll have the music playing softly in the background. You’ll be greeted with Champagne and chocolates on your arrival. And your professional, red-carpet hair and makeup artist will be ready to pamper you with heavenly-scented products and soft brushes. The entire experience is designed to make you feel comfortable, relaxed and at ease.

But we’re not in your head. So if you’ve got negative thoughts running on repeat, then you’ll need something to distract you. During these moments, we suggest you focus on your “why.” it could be as simple as, “I deserve a day to feel beautiful,” or it could be something deeper like, “I’ve never had a great relationship with my body, but that changes today.” Whatever your reason is, hone in on it. Know what it is. Then use that as your mental focal point whenever the nerves start to creep in.

9. Speak up

If you’re nervous – say it! Don’t feel comfortable with a pose? Let Lindsay know. She’s got 10 more up her sleeve anyway. Dying to try a certain pose? Show Lindsay your inspiration because she can make it happen. SchlickArt is a safe space for you to speak your mind and know that someone is listening with ultimate care. This session is about you, after all. It’s meant to be a beautiful experience and memory, just as much as it’s meant to capture stunning images.

10. Be present not perfect

And if you find yourself getting caught in your head, remember that you’re not supposed to be or look perfect for this shoot. You’re supposed to be you. That’s all. Lindsay will help you stay in the moment with easy-to-follow cues, lots of communication and, of course, some laughs. All you have to worry about is enjoying yourself.

11. Pick your playlist

Boudoir photography session, how to calm your nerves, calm your nerves, how to calm your nerves for boudoir, SchlickArt boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir photographer, Santa Clarita boudoir photography, Los Angeles boudoir, Santa Clarita boudoir shootOnce it’s time to start shooting, we’ll turn up the music and get the party started. If you have a song or artist you love, let Lindsay know! Sometimes all it takes is the right anthem to put you in a good headspace and bring out your inner goddess.

12. Have a drink

A little liquid courage never hurt anyone in a boudoir photography session. We’ve got the Champagne flowing, but if you prefer something else, just let us know. Not into alcohol? We have a full coffee and tea bar. A hot cup of tea can be just as comforting as a glass of bubbly. We’re here to cater to you

13. Trust the process

Finally, the most important thing is to simply trust the process. Lindsay has boudoir photography down to a fine science. Plus, she knows how to create an experience that makes it fun – not nerve-wracking. It takes no small amount of courage to drop the robe, but once you do, the nerves quickly dissipate. So go with it. Trust that Lindsay is shooting you from all the best angles. Trust that the lighting is just right, and your hair and makeup is perfectly on point. Trust that you’ll be in awe of your own beauty by the time you come back for your big reveal! Because if you do, you will have fun. By the time you’re done, you’ll wish you could do it all over again.

Finally, you may never have another experience like this again. So cherish it. Let yourself feel ridiculously glamorous and uniquely beautiful – because you are!

About Lindsay’s Photography for Women

With the mind of a businesswoman and the heart of an adventurer, Lindsay began to conceive of a different kind of Santa Clarita photography business. With an eye for seeing the beauty in life and in others, Lindsay could use the camera to spread beauty.
