1. You learn what true confidence feels like.

Most of us think confidence comes from a few weeks of being “on your game.” You’re working out, eating healthy and feeling pretty good about your commitment this time. You might even hit a stride and reward yourself with a new dress or a girls night out. But eventually the workouts become less frequent, you fall for a cookie (or two), and your stride starts to disappear. Big surprise – your newfound confidence goes with it.  

Why? All that effort might make you feel like fire for a night or even a few weeks. But you’re chasing an idea of beauty that you don’t live in every day.

And our definition of sexy changes as we begin to associate it with bigger ideas, like success or finding yourself or being a good mom.

What’s great about boudoir is it asks you to define what’s sexy to you right now. You see, once you decide to go for it, there are a whole bunch of fun, exciting things to think about. 

Do you want to wear the piece of lingerie that makes you feel most comfortable? Or maybe your shoot is going to show a different side of you, with the skimpiest lingerie, smokiest eyes and craziest hair. You could also wear your partner’s shirt, sweater or sports gear. Or maybe you want to wear your own sports gear because that’s when you feel the strongest. Suddenly, you have too many ideas.

By the end of the brainstorming process alone, you’ve come up with all these different parts of your that are sexy enough to put in front of a camera. You’ve thought about sexiness in a new way … the way that only you can be it. With no one else in the picture – like that Insta model or your friend who always looks like she stepped out of a catalog – you only have to think what makes you sexy.

5. It teaches you it’s not about the weight. 

Whether you’re losing it, gaining it or just obsessing over it, weight is something we all think about. And it’s so easy to shift from being conscious about our relationships with our bodies … to fixating on that relationship. 

But here’s the thing: Your weight, size or shape is not the end-all be-all of your beauty. Yes, it’s part of what makes you beautiful, but you are so much more than your weight. The way your body moves. The way your smile lights up your face. The look in your eyes when you feel truly confident. Those are parts of your beauty that, sometimes, get lost or forgotten when we fixate exclusively on our weight. 

You see, boudoir is not about the weight. It’s about shifting the relationship you have with your body by seeing how beautiful it is right now. In fact, I think it’s more empowering to shoot boudoir when you’re not at your “best weight.” If you show up to a boudoir shoot after two weeks of binge dieting, or even two months of dedicated two-a-days at the gym, you won’t look like the typical you. Instead, you’ll look like the ultra-thin version of you, which may not be attainable during most points in your life.

That means, when you look at your photos months or years later, you’ll see an unattainable version of yourself. Once again, you’re looking at yet another “perfect woman” who doesn’t feel like you. 

Instead of pouring over those photos and remembering how damn sexy you are, you’ll once again deny your self-worth by thinking … but that’s not really me. And that’s not empowering – or at least not as empowering as it could be. 

6. It encourages unconditional self-love. 

We all have bits we love about ourselves and bits we’d rather not draw attention to, right? Well, when you’re dressed to the nines in lingerie, those “trouble spots” can feel pretty exposed. That’s when we, as women, really start to pick on ourselves. Whether your thighs are your lifelong nemeses, or you feel the need to point out your cellulite so others don’t do it first, we all have those parts of our bodies that we’re extra sensitive about. 

Unfortunately, that sensitivity usually comes with a whole mess of negative thoughts about our self-image. Think about it – every time you say you hate your stomach, you’re re-affirming that your body is problematic or shameful. But you still have to live in that body every day. So you’re carrying around that negativity all the time. 

But what if you were taking photos with a different goal? What if the whole point of stepping in front of the camera was to celebrate the gorgeous natural curves of your body? Now that’s an entirely different kind of experience – one that doesn’t set you up for disappointment the way a typical selfie might.
