Ah, bridal parties. There’s always a wild card in the bunch. And guess whose job it is to wrangle her? Someone has to get all your crazy bridesmaids and groomsmen in one place, and it’s definitely not the bride. Your wedding photographer should be like the legendary cowgirl of weddings: quick to control a herd of (drunk) animals without spooking them.

Now, many times, bridesmaids and groomsmen aren’t keen to be whisked away from their afternoon of fun to stand in line and pose for photos. It’s a delicate balance to keep the day fun without missing any of the key shots. But it’s totally doable, Lindsay says.

“A photographer is also a producer on your wedding day,” she said. “Imagine all the moving parts of producing a TV show. A wedding day is similar. You can’t simply focus on the photography; you have to be confident enough in your photography skills to also spend time and energy creating an experience for the couple and their guests.”

3. The Timekeeper Extraordinaire

Possibly the most important “side skill” of a wedding photographer is her ability to manage and follow the timeline. Some photographers take more control of this than others, as other vendors also need to weigh in on the couple’s time throughout the day. Again, it’s a balancing act of sharing the couple while also moving things along to stay on track. But trust us, you’ll be so glad to have someone else in charge of your timeline, so all you have to do is follow along.

“The timeline is an essential focus for the photographer because of lighting,” Lindsay explained. “We know when the window is for the most gorgeous light of the day, so we have to work with all the other demands on your time to make sure we get you during that window.”
